As of 2010, 34,743 people called Merritt Island home. The former island is now technically a peninsula and is considered part of the Palm Bay, Melbourne, and Titusville Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area.

The median age was 42-years-old. 21.8% of the population was under 18, 6.1% were between 18 and 24, 26.1% were between 25 and 44, 26.2% were between 45 and 64 and 10.8% were 65 and older.

There are 95.3 males to every 100 females. There are 92.3 males for every 100 females 18 and older.

39% of the population is college-educated.

85% of the population is a homeowner.

According to the 2000 census, the median household income was $43,532. The median family income was $52,388.

Unemployment rates are 6.30% with recent positive job growth that should bring unemployment numbers down. There is a good mix of white-collar and blue-collar jobs in the area. Sales jobs are very common and account for 12.18% of local employment, followed by administrative support (11.30%) and managerial positions (11.16%).


The majority of residents (98%) commute by car. The average commute time is 24 minutes, that’s one minute less than the average national commute time of 25 minutes.
